CICADA 3301 (2015)

Known by many as a mysterious internet puzzle to recruit cryptanalysts, Cicada 3301 was a series of complex puzzles presented on the web in 2013 and 2014 by anonymous organizers, to be solved with no apparent purpose. The clues were designed to be decoded in order to receive a new part of the puzzle. Clues were presented on the internet, and what is known as the “dark web”, as well as at physical locations around the globe.

Made completely out of animated drawings on paper, Charly Fasano reinterprets the Cicada 3301 internet phenomenon against a sonic landscape crafted by Rick & Roy. Seen by conspiracy theorists as an exercise established by the NSA and CIA with no apparent purpose or end, Fasano transforms Cicada 3301 into an innocent quest of characters Girdy and Gordy to attend the ultimate dance party in Memphis, Tennessee.
